Valle de La Orotava

Part of Tenerife · Canary Islands

Tenerife's northern slope beneath Mount Teide: ungrafted Listán Negro, century-old vines and the braided cordon you'll find nowhere else.

The Valle de La Orotava is Tenerife’s great northern slope, running down from Mount Teide to the sea across La Orotava, Los Realejos and Puerto de la Cruz. It faces the Atlantic, catches the trade winds and the mist almost every day, and has vines from the lower slopes right up to the top of the valley. It also lends its name to one of the island’s five appellations, the DO Valle de La Orotava.

What makes it unique is the vine itself: much of the valley is trained in cordón trenzado, canes several metres long plaited by hand into ropes, a system you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Old vines, often a century old and ungrafted, with the traditional Listán Negro and Listán Blanco. Some of the finest Canary reds you can buy without breaking the bank come from here.
