La Palma
Part of Canary Islands
The beautiful, volcanic island: high-altitude vines in the north, fresh ash in the south and its own DO since 1994.
La Palma is the greenest island in the archipelago and also one of the most volcanic: Cumbre Vieja erupted again in 2021 and you can still see it in the landscape and in the fields. Its appellation, Vinos de La Palma, was created in 1994 and splits the island into three subzones: Hoyo de Mazo in the centre and east, Fuencaliente in the south-west, and the North, which runs from Puntallana round to Tijarafe and Puntagorda.
It’s in that north that the wine turns heroic. Terraced vines, above a thousand metres in places, sometimes above the clouds, with ash and basalt underfoot. This is where the whites of Listán Blanco, Vijariego Blanco and Albillo Criollo grow, along with a new wave of young growers bottling for the first time under their own surname, like Michael Candelario.
